Abstract

The current theory of Electrocoagulation has not been able to explain all the phenomena associated with EC, especially the differences in removal efficiency of metals in wastewater. In this paper, we discuss the facts associated with metal removal using EC, and develop a mechanism that explains them. To do so first, a review of the technology and the current model is done. Second, the results from a pilot plant relative to metal removal efficiency using EC are shown. Third, a mechanism for metal removal is presented. This mechanism fits data and observations, follows iron Pourbaix diagram, solubility diagrams, and agrees with the characterization of EC products. Finally the factors affecting metal removal are mentioned.
