Abstract

When electrodes react with an electrolyte, electrochromic (EC) devices undergo concentration polarization, which deteriorates EC device performance. Therefore, this study used poly 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) – silver nanowires (AgNWs)/indium tin oxide (ITO) as the counter electrodes of tungsten trioxide (WO3) EC devices. PEDOT:PSS-AgNWs/ITO exhibits favorable conductivity and light transmittance. In addition, AgNWs reduce the concentration polarization when EC devices undergo redox reactions, which results in an increase in the reversibility of ions entering the active layer of WO3 in an electrolyte. After using WO3 EC devices coated with PEDOT:PSS-AgNWs/ITO as counter electrodes, the transmittance modulation (ΔT), charge density (ΔOD), and coloration efficiency (CE) increased from 49.65% to 56.03%, 0.41 to 0.48, and 50.18 to 77.17 cm2/C, respectively.
