Abstract

This chapter compiles the basic physical and chemical properties of silver, and its application for the construction of primary and secondary batteries, including fuel cells. Representative examples of silver compounds in various oxidation states were compiled and compared with the characteristics of other elements used in electrochemical power sources. The description of the chemical and electrochemical properties of silver takes into account also the nanostructured forms of this element. A synthetic presentation of silver-based power sources includes silver-zinc, magnesium-silver, lithium-silver primary batteries, silver-zinc and other secondary batteries, as well as fuel cells, indicating also the role of nanostructured forms of silver in these constructions. Application of silver in photovoltaic cells and supercapacitors is briefly mentioned.
