Abstract

The dimeric, metal-metal-bonded rhenium(III) complex [Re 2 Cl 8 ] 2− is stable in the basic aluminum chloride-1-methyl-3-ethylimidazolium chloride (AlCl 3 -MeEtimCl) molten salt and can be reduced to [Re 2 Cl 8 ] 3− at a glassy-carbon electrode in a reversible electrode reaction. The addition of Re 3 Cl 9 to basic AlCl 3 -MeEtimCl produces the trimeric, metal-metal-bonded rhenium(III) complex [Re 3 Cl 12 ] 3−
