Abstract

We report the unzipping of multiple-walled WS2 nanotubes (WS2-MWNTs) to produce WS2 nanoribbons by employing an electrochemical oxidation process. When conditioning the WS2-MWNTs in an acidic solution at 1.2 V vs. RHE, W-S bond was oxidized inducing a longitudinal unzipping of WS2 walls. The resultant WS2 nanoribbons displayed a significant superior catalytic activity in comparison to the WS2-MWNTs.
