Abstract

1. The polarographic reduction of compounds of the type of XM(CO)5 (M=Mn, Re; X=halogen, aryl, acetyl, aroyl) on a dropping mercury electrode in acetonitrile was studied. 2. The reduction of all the types of compounds indicated above proceeds irreversibly according to a two-electron mechanism. In all cases there is a homolytic activation of the bond being reduced. 3. On the basis of the values of the reduction potentials of aryl metal pentacarbonyls obtained, it was hypothesized that there is no conjugation between the aromatic ring and the metal atom.
