Abstract
Electrochemical relaxation phenomena consisting of loss maxima and capacitance dispersion were investigated at Hg/borax and Hg/KF contacts in the frequency range 0.1 – 1000 Hz. At all the contacts a distinct loss maximum near 10 Hz is found, which occurs at positive potentials versus Hg/HgO/0.1 M borax reference and is attributed to a relaxing mercury oxidation. A second kind of loss maximum, which decreases with time, is located near the double-layer loss peak and is ascribed to a modified double-layer relaxation. The low frequency (0.1 – 3 Hz) impedance and phase angle measurements were carried out by means of an XY recorder and the measurements above 40 Hz with a bridge that has been described previously. The observed absorption phenomena are interpreted in terms of a simple relaxation model derived from chemical relaxation principles. It leads to features of absorption similar to those arising from pure dielectrics.
