Abstract

Electrochemical properties of powder iron/carbon systems in aqueous alkaline solution are discussed. The factors affecting the reversibility of the red-ox reactions on the powder iron/C electrode have been described. The influence of the oxygen and alkali concentration of iron powder surface structures and degrees of iron oxidizing have been performed using electron microscopy. The changes of potential range from -0,56 V to -1,0 V depending on alkali concentration have been fixed by cyclic voltamograms. The formation of new iron hydroxide films in joint presence of oxygen and hydrogen in electrolyte has been proposed. There have been used CVA and EIS studies to elucidate the hydrous oxide films formation on the surface of iron powder electrode. The surface coating by FeO of the iron particles after oxidizing has been validated by SEM.
