Abstract
Battery-powered implantable devices have been in use for over forty-three years. The first successful cardiac pacemaker was implanted in 1960. Since that time, a variety of implantable battery-powered devices have been developed and introduced for the treatment of everything from neurological disorders to hearing loss. The development of lithium batteries in the late 1960s led to better, smaller devices that showed multiyear longevity and high reliability.
