Abstract

Trifluoropropane could not be prepared by the "crossed" Kolbe reaction from a mixture of trifluoroacetic acid and propionic acid. Instead, a mixture consisting of 3,3,3-trifluoropropene, 1,2-bis(trifluoromethyl)ethane, 1,1,2-tris(trifluoromethyl)ethane, and 1,2,4-tris(trifluoromethyl)butane was obtained. The probable mechanism for the reaction is discussed.
