Abstract

Direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs) are an attractive alternative to their methanol analogues. A series of Ru/Pt, Ru/Pd and Ru/Au complexes was studied to determine the electrocatalytic activity of these complexes for the oxidation of ethanol. Cyclic voltammetry was performed to establish the affinity of these complexes towards ethanol oxidation. Constant potential (bulk) electrolysis was carried out and the liquid products of oxidation were identified and quantified by gas chromatography. Headspace gas samples were collected in a modified airfree cell and analyzed using a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer.
