Abstract

The talk will focus on the applications of electrochemistry and nanotechnology for the synthesis and characterisation of electro-catalysts used in fuel cells. Electrochemical methods such as, Electrochemical Atomic Layer Epitaxy (EC-ALE) and Electrochemical Atomic Layer Deposition (EC-ALD) are being explored for synthesis as other potential techniques used in the improvement of PGM based electro-catalysts for proton electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Synthesis and characterisation of these electro-catalysts (nanostructured/ nanomaterials), including their proposed application in fuel cells, will be discussed as part of the talk. The connection of the electro-catalysis work to alkaline direct alcohol fuel cells (DAFCs) with focus on micro fuel cells and anionic membrane development will also be highlighted. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The author wish to acknowledge the DST, NRF and CSIR for funding.
