Abstract

Several carbon blacks, widely differing in surface and bulk characteristics, have been subjected to potentiostatic corrosion tests (1 V RHE) in H 3PO 4 at different temperatures. Corrosion currents and calculated carbon weight losses are shown as a function of time. It is confirmed that log (corrosion current) is directly related to log (time on stream) for the duration of the test. The surface area of different blacks relates linearly to measured corrosion currents. Examination of the normalized corrosion currents vs pH of the slurry shows a volcano-shaped correlation with maximum corrosion at pH = 8.
