Abstract
Trifluoroacetic acid can be reduced to 1,1,1-trifluroethane at a platinum electrode. A mechanism involving hydrogenation by hydrogen adsorbed on the electorde is postulated. The significance of a comparison of the electrochemical behaviour of acetate and trifluoroacetate on platinum at low potentials on the mechanism of the Kolbe reaction is discussed.
