Abstract

This paper presents an investigation about the corrosion resistence of intermetallic alloys Ni-Cu-Al, in Hank's solution which has been carried out using electrochemical techniques. The alloys tested were 50 (wt%) Ni- (25 and 30) Al-(25 and 20) Cu using Hank's solution, due to its high corrosion resistance provided by the formation of an external protective layer (Al2O3 and NiO oxides). For comparison, AISI 316L type stainless steel has also been used. Electrochemical techniques included linear polarization resistance (LPR), potentiodynamic polarization curves, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements. The different techniques have shown that these alloys show similar or higher corrosion resistance than conventional AISI 316L stainless steel. The corrosion resistance decreases when the Al content increases in the alloys. These alloys are susceptible to pitting corrosion attack in the rich in Ni interdendritic phases.
