Abstract

In this work, β-cyclodextrin grafted polyacrylamide (β-CD-PAM) has been synthesized and deployed as a green corrosion inhibitor for pipeline steel (X80 steel) in 1 mol/L sulfuric acid solution. The corrosion inhibiting performance of β-CD-PAM was evaluated at different concentrations and temperatures using weight-loss, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and infrared spectra methods. The results showed that the corrosion of X80 steel in sulfuric corrosion solution was efficiently inhibited by β-CD-PAM. The favorable performance was ascribed to the formation of β-CD-PAM adsorption films, which followed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Electrochemical experimental results showed that β-CD-PAM was a mixed type corrosion inhibitor predominantly as cathodic inhibitor. In addition, β-CD-PAM is adjudged an effective and green corrosion inhibitor and can be utilized as a potential corrosion inhibitor in oil and gas production.
