Abstract

The electrocatalytic oxidation of 1,2-propanediol in perchloric acid medium was investigated using cyclic voltammetry by varying different experimental parameters: sweep rate, potential limits, temperature of the solution, and concentration of diol. A complementary analysis of the electrolysis products was performed by HPLC. Reaction mechanisms are suggested, which take into account these voltammetric and chromatographic results, and which may explain how the different reaction products are formed during the prolonged electrolysis of 1,2-propanediol.
