Abstract

The oxidation of CH 2O on Pt electrode is considerably catalysed by adatoms of Pb, Bi and Tl obtained by underpotential deposition. The Cu adatoms have a relatively small effect. The effects have been explained by a prevention of formation of strongly bound intermediate XXXCOH, through a suppression of hydrogen adsorption on Pt. A part of the effect is due to a prevention of adsorption of another strongly bound intermediate XXC(OII) 2, which requires two sites for adsorption. It has been demonstrated that H ad on Pt has the same effect on oxidation of CH 2O as on the oxidation of HCOOH. Catalytic effects go through a maximum at θ M∼0.5. Smaller effects of Cu adatoms have been ascribed to their lower adsorbability.
