Electrocardiography and hematological findings of closed cervix pyometra in bitches

Abstract

Pyometra is one of the most common diestral disorders, especially in middle-aged intact bitches, due to bacterial infection in the uterus. It usually causes mild to severe septicemia that may eventually end up in the animal's death. In certain cases, septicemia may induce myocardial cellular damage depending upon the disease's course and outcome, which may even alter the Electrocardiographic (ECG) parameters, which is the significance of this study. A total of 6 bitches of various breeds affected with closed cervix pyometra were included and evaluated for haemato-biochemical parameters before treatment. The ECG recordings were compared before and after treatment by paired t-test. The study revealed mild anemia, leukocytosis, lymphopenia, increased immature neutrophils, mild increase in creatinine value, and alterations in the heart rate. However, there were no significant changes in the ECG parameters in the pre and post-treatment of closed cervix pyometra except for the heart rate. Early diagnosis and treatment resulted in reduced myocardial damage leading to a better prognosis in all the bitches studied.
