Abstract

The aim is to develop an optimized electro-digestion (ED) process for production of organic acids from food waste (FW) and chemically enhanced primary treated sludge (CEPT) under 10% semi-solid conditions. The FW (100 g) and CEPT sludge (1000 mL) were mixed under pre-optimized conditions (1:10 ratio) in a four identical stirred tank reactors (CSTRs) operated as ED system (i.e., 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 V) at room temperature for 20 days at 150 rpm. By adding alkali, pH was maintained near neutral and the samples were collected intermittently for physio-chemical and bacterial community analysis. From the results, ED under 0.3 V favored 60% higher organic acid production over control. The ED system enriched with distinct bacterial diversity such as Bifidobacterium, Anaerofilum and Paracoccus whereas the control enriched with Pseudomonas, Eneterococcus and Tepidomicrobium. To conclude, the ED of FW with CEPT sludge under semi-solid conditions is recommended to produce high concentrations of acetic acid.
