Abstract
The electrochemical conversion of biomass which does not compete with nutrition purposes represents an attractive field of research. In particular, waste streams that usually only employed for incineration can be used to make value-added chemicals, this approach is of interest in terms of ecological and economic aspects. In the pulping process, the major biomass by-products are lignin, tall oil, and turpentine fraction. The presentation deals with the selective electrochemical conversion of lignin to vanillin and diacids from turpentine fraction. Besides the electrochemical process, also valid work-up protocols are outlined.
