Abstract

Propulsion plants for arctic tankers must have characteristics not normally required for other large ships. These special requirements make electric transmission systems particularly attractive. The paper examines four candidate electric transmission systems for this application. The performance of two of these, the ac variable-frequency system and the ac—rectified—dc system, are reported in detail, and the analog computer program used to simulate the operation of the ac—rectified—dc system is described.
