Abstract

Abstract The interlayer spacing d 002, X-ray diffraction profiles of the (110), (112) and (006) lines and the dependence of the electrical resistivity, Hall coefficient and transverse magnetoresistance at liquid nitrogen temperature on d 002 were measured for pyrolytic carbons with a wide range of d 002 For selected samples the temperature dependence of the resistivity and magnetoresistance were measured from 2–4 to' 290 K in magnetic fields up to 3 T. The d 002 values for which discontinuities in slopes or sign reversals occur for each of the resistivity, magnetoresistance and Hall coefficient against d 002 curves are common, and are 3–367,3–380 and 3–420 A. These values are identical to those for which stepwise changes occur in the interlayer spacings observed in annealing studies of cokes and pyrolytic carbons, and in fast-neutron irradiation and grinding of graphite.
