Abstract

In order to study the applicability of the electrical resistance measurement for damage analysis of carbon yarns, pullout tests on yarns embedded in concrete as well as tensile tests on yarns were carried out. A qualitative correlation between the load drop and the increase of the electrical resistance could be observed in the pullout tests and tensile tests, respectively. The resistance measurement in the tensile tests further showed that even though all filaments were ruptured only a small change in the resistance occurred. The reason for this is the bridging of filament ruptures by cross-contacts between the individual filaments whose influence is further analysed with the aid of current flow simulations using the FEM tool ANSYS.
