Abstract

1. 1. Alanine and phenylalanine have been used to induce changes in short-circuit currents (AIC) across intestines taken from 5 different mammalian species. AIC was a hyperbolic function of amino acid concentration characterized by the parameters J m (maximum change in AIC) and K m (concentration needed to attain an AIC equal to half the J m ). 2. 2. K m but not J m was shown to remain independent of the species used (guinea-pig, pig, rabbit, rat and hamster). 3. 3. AIC determined K m constants showed good agreement with values obtained previously from direct measurement of alanine and methionine uptake into rabbit distal ileum. 4. 4. AIC measurements provide a rapid and specific means of characterizing a high affinity low capacity amino acid transport system common to different mammalian enterocytes.
