Abstract

The electrical conductances of the solutions of sodium nitrate (NaNO 3), and ammonium nitrate (NH 4NO 3) in 2-methoxyethanol + water mixed solvent media containing 0.25, 0.48, and 0.72 mole fractions of 2-methoxyethanol ( x 1) have been reported at 298.15, 308.15, 313.15, 318.15, and 323.15 K. The conductance data have been analyzed by the 1978 Fuoss conductance-concentration equation in terms of the limiting molar conductance ( Λ 0), the association constant ( K A) and the association diameter ( R). The results indicated that these two electrolytes exist mostly as free ions in the 2-methoxyethanol + water mixed solvent medium containing 0.25 mole fraction of 2-methoxyethanol, whereas these are found be moderately associated in the media containing 0.48, and 0.72 mole fractions of the organic cosolvent within the temperature range of 298.15 to 323.15 K. Influences of temperature on the values of the limiting molar conductances and the association constants of these electrolytes have been discussed. The cations are found to remain solvated in the present mixed solvent media, the Na + ion being always more solvated than the NH 4 + ion. We also observed changing solvation behavior of the NO 3 - ion with the composition of the medium.
