Abstract

A dilution method is proposed as a means of studying the adsorption of cationic surfactants on coal. Only the electrical part of the adsorption is observed. It is shown that particle charge increases with surfactant concentration, and some irreversibility occurs because the mobilities of states of high dilution depend on initial surfactant concentrations as well. The magnitude of the adsorption is different for different cations. A comparison of measurements on dilution with surfactant solution and distilled water supports the mechanism of particle charge arising from preferential cation adsorption.
