Abstract

The Ce2Ni5C3 compound having a tetragonal La2Ni5C3‐type structure with the space group P4/mbm has been prepared using the standard arc melting technique. The X‐ray powder diffraction patterns showed that the sample was single‐phase. From the magnetic measurements, the Ce2Ni5C3 compound was found to be a ferromagnet having an ordering temperature TC = 2.3 K. The magnetic susceptibility obeyed a Curie‐Weiss law with a Weiss temperature Θw = 2.0 K. The effective magnetic moment estimated from the Curie constant was μeff = 1.99 μB/Ce, and the saturation value of the magnetization at 2.0 K was 1.4μB/Ce. The temperature dependence of the specific heat and electrical resistivity showed anomalous behavior accompanied by a magnetic phase transition.
