Abstract

A portable device for measuring low-frequency electric fields is described. The sensor for the device makes use of the breakdown of gas contained in a glass bulb. The shape of the bulb determines the directional properties of the sensor. A spherical bulb has a spatially isotropic sensitivity, whereas a cylindrical bulb responds, primarily, to the electric field component along its axis. The operation of the device with both types of sensor has been studied in electrical fields typical of high-voltage transmission lines and switch yards.
