Abstract

Static magnetic and electric field induced deformations in nematic liquid crystals have been studied by several authors (1)-(9). The equilibrium state of the Freedericksz transition is well understood for both magnetic and electric fields. In the static case the deformation is determined by the magnetic or electric susceptibilities, the elastic constants of the materials used as well as the boundary conditions.
