Abstract

Flash event caused by DC electric field/current was applied to the healing of micro crack damages in 8mol% Y2O3 stabilized cubic ZrO2 polycrystals (8Y-CSZ). Even in the bulk ZrO2 polycrystal, the flash event occurred by applying the DC power higher than a critical value of Wc ≈ 100 mW/mm3 at 800 °C. For above the Wc value, the micro crack damages can successfully be healed under the flash condition within several minutes without any healing agents. The flash healing phenomena cannot be explained only by the temperature effect and were accelerated about 2 times through the current-enhanced diffusional processes.
