Abstract

This paper presents finite element studies carried out on a porcelain insulator used in 420 kV SF6 live tank circuit breaker. For this purpose, porcelain interrupter insulator is modeled in axisymmetric domain as insulator is essentially rotationally axisymmetric. Electric potential and field distributions were studied in different environmental conditions along insulator leakage distance. Cases considered for this report include clean and dry insulator surface, wet insulator surface, sand covered insulator surface. All simulations were performed using the software Finite element method magnetics (FEMM) which uses finite element method (FEM) at its backend process. To get the electric field values at power frequency and lightning impulse voltages, results are extrapolated to specific voltage level and are specified wherever necessary.
