Abstract

Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and full electric vehicles (EVs) are the fastest growing part of the passenger car market. These vehicles rely on high-performance electric machines and power electronics to drive them resulting in exciting and novel advancements in design and manufacturing. System level attributes and architecture selections provide a clear drive on the component level designs and overall vehicle performance. It is the intention of this article to provide an overview of the numerous HEV topologies including full EV approaches and the types of electric machines they use.
