Abstract

A model of a single-mode Fabry-Perot semiconductor laser that predicts laser performance in analog transmission has been developed. The model is based on a time domain simulation of the rate equations for a semiconductor laser. The model can be used to plot the light versus current curve for a given laser and subsequently the derivative of that curve. In addition, the response of the laser to step inputs can be simulated. Second and third order harmonic distortion and third order intermodulation distortion are measured by carrying out simulations in the time domain and then transforming the results to the frequency domain by FFT. These simulations can be used in the analysis of linearization methods for semiconductor lasers. >
