Abstract

This year marks the centenary of the independent development by Swan and Edison of the successful incandescent lamp. This device, more than any other, was responsible for the final conquest of the dark ages. However, it was merely one of the last shots in the battle which electric light, in one form or another, had been waging against the forces of darkness since the turn of the 19th century
