Abstract

The spark plasma may be responsible for sweeping off impurities from powder surfaces and Joule heat may cause to promote sinteringin Spark plasma sintering method. It was found that Wood charcoal powder can be heated fast and sintered in a very short time: 5minutes at the temperature range of 1000°C to 2700°C using Spark plasma sintering method. The bulk density, thermal constantsand electrical resistance of the sintered charcoal exceeded those of the charcoal made in a high temperature electric furnace and theglass-like carbon made from thermosetting synthetic resin. It seems that spark plasma influenced these properties of the sintered charcoal. It was suggested from these results that the sintered charcoal was graphitized.
