Abstract

The paper identifies the technological developments which have opened the way for electric, all-wheel-drive, tracked vehicles. A programme of experimental work using a single tracked 1 10th scale model on sand showed that track tension was significantly reduced in this system. However, problems were encountered with loss of traction between roadwheel and track. Subsequently, a 1 5th scale free-ranging vehicle with rubber tracks was trialled on a variety of surfaces and proved the concept to be viable.
