Abstract
Resumo A Lei Eleitoral de 1855, ou Lei dos Círculos, prometia alterar a representação parlamentar brasileira por meio do voto distrital e das inelegibilidades. Qual o impacto dessa lei na província com a maior bancada do Império? Este estudo identificou e comparou o perfil da representação de Minas Gerais eleita antes e depois da reforma, recorrendo a diversas fontes: almanaques, periódicos, relatórios presidenciais, debates parlamentares e biografias. Concluiu-se que a Lei dos Círculos trouxe diversidade partidária e estreia de elites locais mineiras na Câmara dos Deputados. Diante disso, nova lei foi adotada em 1860 a fim de reduzir sua imprevisibilidade.
