Abstract

A 93-year-old woman presented to the emergency department for evaluation of nontraumatic, unilateral acute vision loss in the left eye. Visual acuity was 20/50 bilaterally. Intraocular pressure was normal. Bedside ultrasound was performed as an adjunct to evaluate for potential etiologies of her symptoms. The symptomatic left eye appeared normal on ultrasound, whereas the unaffected contralateral eye (right eye) appeared grossly abnormal (Figure). Further history revealed the absence of any acute or chronic visual disturbances associated with the abnormal ultrasound findings.
