Abstract

According to a study conducted by pharmacist Dima Quato, PharmD, University of Chicago, 81% of older adults in the United States use at least one prescription medication.1 Prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medication and dietary supplement use for 3,005 community-dwelling older adults was observed and potential severe drug—drug interactions identified. The prevalence of use of prescription medications, OTC products, or dietary supplements was estimated. Of patients, 42% (95% CI 40%–45%) used an OTC product and 49% (46%–53%) a dietary supplement.
