Abstract

Admissions to the Geriatric Unit of a 270-bed state psychiatric hospital in western Virginia during a twelvemonth peri- od of time were followed until discharge, but no longer than one year from the day of admission to the hospital, to: describe the admission cohort characteristics; determine their aftercare service needs; and examine the associations between patient characteristics, after-care needs, and discharge destinations Lo either institutional- or cornmu- nity-based care settings. The results describe a service-needy popu- lation in which trans-institutional transfers are a prevalent discharge destination However. the significant findings are not atypical of reporls of other long-term care populations whose physical and men- tal conditions warrant institutional placement decisions.
