Abstract

The office of President of the United States is one of the most important positions in the country. The Commander in Chief is in charge of the most powerful military complex, the most affluent nation and must make decisions that will drastically affect the domestic and global community. The power bestowed upon the President and the trust they must earn from the American people, demonstrates the importance that each candidate fulfills the requirements outlined in the Constitution. While most of the conditions necessary for one’s presidential candidature defined in the Constitution are clear, the specific phrase, “natural born citizen,” contains much ambiguity and has continued to be a source of conflict during presidential elections. This ambiguity extends to the current presidential candidate Ted Cruz, who was born in Alberta, Canada in 1970
