Abstract
This work focuses on the complete analysis of pin-based gabled frames with haunches at the eaves from the elastic range up to impending failure. Under the usual assumptions of first-order rigid-plastic theory, an equilibrium technique based on Castigliano's second theorem and the principle of virtual work is used to develop closed-form solutions for the moments, deflections and angles of rotation of the plastic hinges. These solutions are programmed on a minicomputer. As subsequently demonstrated in the paper, they can easily be used for the analysis-design procedure of this widespread class of industrial frames.
