Abstract

The first part of this study concentrates on the formulation and numerical solution of elastohydrodynamic point contact problems. The formulation of this problem involves several aspects, such as the lubricant flow in the contact, the deformation of contacting surfaces, the variation of the lubricant properties with pressure and the global equilibrium of the system. An algorithm is developed that solves simultaneously all the equations defining the aspects quoted above. This algorithm has the following characteristics. 1. (a) Heavily loaded contacts may be considered. 2. (b) Solids having rough or wavy surfaces are accepted. 3. (c) Roughness or waviness is described explicitly. 4. (d) Execution times are moderate, smaller than for smooth surfaces. A complete description of the equations involved and of their discretization is presented, as well as a detailed description of the algorithm developed.
