Abstract

The aim of the present work has been the incorporation of the diffuse necking zone into the numerical calculation procedure and the formulation of a failure criterion which is able to define the point at which failure occurs by the formation of shear bands, provided that the inhomogeneous stress field is known. The numerical calculation of the necking zone is given for the special cases of the tensile test and deep drawing test with a ball punch, both of which are of particular interest in materials testing. The failure criterion is defined in a generally valid form and its use is demonstrated for the special cases mentioned.
