Abstract

This paper presents the results of an elastic-plastic finite element analysis of the behaviour of subsurface cracks beneath the pitch line of a gear tooth. Attention is focused on the potential for a ligament collapse spalling mechanism as hypothesized by the authors (Y. Ding, R. Jones and B.T. Kuhnell, Wear, 185 (1995) 141–149). The detailed numerical results from this elastic-plastic finite element analysis are compared with that of a previous linear elastic finite element analysis reported in the above article, and it is shown that the results are in qualitative agreement with the previous linear elastic analysis.
