Abstract

Stresses in the hollow mandrel and strains in its bore have been calculated by the finite element method from normal and shear stresses at the deforming material/mandrel interface. The analysis shows the presence of high compressive radial and hoop stresses and large axial tensile stresses in the mandrel at and close to the the deformation zone. The axial stresses are much larger than those due to fractional drag alone and are caused mainly by pressure from the deforming material.
