Abstract

A method previously described (Atomnaya Energiya 2: ing of neutrons on Ca and Ti, empIoying the T(p,n)He3 reaction as the neutron source; the protons with the desired charge were obtained by means of a Van de Graaff generator. Neutrons with an average energy of 900 plus or minus 40 kev impinged on the scatterer. A spheric ionization chamber filled with a mixture of H + Ar was used as neutron detector. The angIe of scattering was changed by changing the location of the detector in the horizontaI plane. The energy and the anguIar sensitivity of the detector were determined experimentally. Differential cross section curves were determined as a function of the cosine of the scattering angle at angles lying between 30 and 150 deg ; the maximum error was found to be 13%. The cross section values obtained represent elastic scattering cross sections because the first levels of Ti and Ca lie above the energy range studied. The total neutron scattering cross section values, the average cosines of the scattering angIes and the elastic e transport cross sections were obtained by integration As f no inelastic scattering takes place and the capture cross section has a low value of themore » order of about 10 millibarn. the total elastic cross section values represent the total cross sections of the two elements.« less
