Abstract

The differential cross-section for the elastic scattering of 7 GeV/c pions on protons was investigated in a 24-liter propane bubble chamber. 508 elastic scatterings of π--mesons on free protons were selected from two-prong events and the differential cross-section measured for cos θcms < 0.995. By making use of the optical theorem to account for the forward scattering the total elastic cross-section was estimated to be (5.13 -0.54 +0.40 ) mb. The shape of the differential cross-section is compared with the theoretical predictions of Domokos (8).
