Abstract
Optical model analyses of the elastic scattering of 3He particles by a wide range of target nuclei at various bombarding energies1–3) have produced sets of parameters varying smoothly from isotope to isotope which provide a good description of the differential cr.:as section data. The need for a spin-orbit term in the potential has often been discussed and theoretical arguments, predict its depth to be approximately 1/3 of the value for nucleons 5). The empirical information concerning the spin-orbit term is however inconclusive, due to the gross insensitivity of the differential cross sections to the spin-orbit potential and, until now, lack of 3He polarization measurements.
